The Sports Analytics Club Program

The sports analytics industry is one that is represented by the largest conference in all of sports by gathering almost over 4,000 attendees to Boston every year at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. Can you guess how many attendees are women or African Americans?

Well, for women it hovers around 20%. For people of color, even less. Yup, you heard that right. Because of these disheartening numbers, MIT SSAC faculty advisor, Ben Shields, and Goldstein & McLintock LLLP partner, Robert Clayton, both founded SACP.

I have the pleasure of serving on the board to move the mission of SACP forward to combine STEM education with sports analytics projects for clubs started in inner city secondary schooling programs around the country. Nothing is more empowering than seeing our participants overcome almost insurmountable obstacles and lean into sports STEM careers to provide a better pathway for themselves. πŸ“ˆ

AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador

Not only is the sports industry male-dominated and underrepresented amongst race and gender minority groups, but so is the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics industries. Isn’t it surprising how much more of parity we can achieve with these groups (that I both fit in) with us just seeing another individual that looks like ourselves in these careers?

If we support a woman in STEM, then she can change the world. With the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Lyda Hill Philanthropies has created the IF/THEN initiative to inspire the next generation of girls considering STEM careers. With the role of ambassador, I have the honor of working with media partners to share my STEM stories for girls to know I exist.

Why do I believe in this initiative to give my time? Honestly, I thought women working in STEM careers was normal. My mom is also a coder that programmed in BASIC with her jobs while I was growing up. My goal to want to create and run a tech company is normal for me and will be normal for the future that I hope to build for the next generation of girls with IF/THEN. β˜„οΈ
